It is quite confusing, what is nature of Nature, in simple words, what are governing principles of evolution. It is dual in nature. Every being urge to survive forever, now it is this want to live and survive which drives them. Adaptation or transforming into improved species is what evolution all about.
When focus is on survival meaning, lion will hunt others, and that is very selfish act. Thinking about self, or being selfish is law of survival, and becoming more selfish over time is evolution. No wonder why human beings are becoming selfish day by day, and if u r very selfish probably it means u r more evolved!! ... on contrary we get to observe altogether different strategy adopted by plants for survival, they believe in sharing, they offer and make them self useful to others, and left others with no choice to them but to get dependent, even cow will produce more milk then its consumption so that they are kept and we protect them from other species. They dictate complete opposite approach from being selfish to being useful and serve. Also you will agree that even their approach is quite successful and they are certainly most evolved. They were always here, so is other organisms. Now it is big confusion that which approach is superior, or does it depends on case to case and can not be applied. Duality is fundamental of nature, it confuses us with many such duality. Now when to be selfish and when to share!?!?...:) anyway i shared my confusion... may be sharing something which is not so important is key, i am confusing you here, but this confusion was important to me!! :)
Now I will show a different aspect to it, trees do not offer until they are capable of it, ones they are fully grown, then only they serve, and they don't serve to fellow tree but to other species. Even they draw their nutrition from mother earth, and are all time in competition with fellow species. On contrary, lions live in group very protective for own family, hunt others, but serve to their own community. Unlike animals, no concept of community in trees, they are designed to be solo, if they are so selfless then why solo!!?, (something to ponder on), and on other hand lioness hunt for family, and lives in group, tigers are exception. So in journey of life, initially we are on receiving end and slowly we shift direction, we serve. We make our self capable of doing so. You have been served so that you can serve later, more you serve more you grow either in community or individual.

This is what I think, from beginning we see see duality or sometimes more than two sides but basically two sides and I suppose this selfishness arises from the fact that one sees duality. The main part is when one's consciousness rises and they becomes single minded and then duality is dead, there's just singularity, just one, one in all and all in one, and from there comes selflessness, and that is what I will call evolution!
