While explaining people what ego is few things happened...
Ego is alwasy have been taken as negative or was associated with proud, while ego is really complex parameter to define, can be explained in various ways..
a) Sevel level of existence:
body - breath- mind- intellect -
memory - ego - self
Ego connects memory to self.
Memory is structure and sequence in space and time, taking different shape and names such as city, events, they can be imagined as a MAP of space and time, but all these events and structure are never permanent. Meaning, it will change its identity that is "ego" with time, but something in these structure is permanent and that which is constant in space and time and is everything.
That one thing is same and thus is connection. Two leaf in tree appears different but for tree both are part of it, similarly any two distinct looking things are connected at two level( or scale).
If we see what they are from fundamental stand point then they are form of energy, at very root level they are same, on contrary if we see them at really large scale, they are again same, universe. When I refer to universe both are referred.
We are stuck in looking for intermediate connections, cast, religion, country, school, work place, facebook. They need to see these links to establish reason or connection.
Little bit about connection: People belive in seeing more these days, we look for physical existance, we need reports, proofs, evidence ( nature of mind). This concept of looking for proof is KILLER, we look for physical connection.
Proof is something which can be sensed by senses, other things are not regarded as proof.
Someone says I am rich, they will say but you don't look like if you are
not having big car. So a proof they buy big house and car, but do
people with big car are rich.
I have seen these days even for friendship proof exists, facebook! if you say someone is your friend people will go to your fb and check it, and if they don;t find person as your friend, they will say, you said person is your friend but fb mei to nahi hai.?!?! Can you see that, they look for something physical thing which they can believe. You may be having friends in fb but not you talked to them, are they your friends.
We are loosing sense of perceiving without proof. Proof is required for robots and not humans, as they miss the last level of existence. I can design robot with program which checks friendship by connection in facebook or google. But humans are designed to see beyond this. What people do these days, if they are angry, they delet person from fb thinking they can eliminate person from life. Or when they add someone they get exited. Suppose someone very famous such as prime minister, sri sri, or some actor creats fb account and adds you. You will be happy for days and that to for no reason!! You think connection has been established, but it was always there, so feel happy now. We all are connected!!
Back to EGO
Ego connects self to your worldly profession, memory, structure and sequence. The changes we notice in space and time is upto the sixth level of existence that’s ego, and above that, space and time also collapse, and everything is "just one thing".

I = 7th level which is constant
am = ego
fisherman, someone, no-one = is structure or state we adopt time to time, and thus is classified in memory.
